The secret lies in the tiny building blocks of its structure.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"854\">The Secret is in the Structure: Si\u2013O vs C\u2013C Bonds<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"856\" data-end=\"1076\">Most everyday rubbers are made from carbon atoms linked together in long chains. This is called a carbon\u2013carbon (C\u2013C) backbone and, while it works fine in mild conditions, it starts to break down when things get hot.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1310\">Silicone rubber is different. Its backbone is made from silicon and oxygen atoms (Si\u2013O) instead of carbon. That one change makes a big difference, it gives silicone its unusually strong resistance to heat, cold and weathering.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"65\" data-end=\"122\">1. Stronger Bonds = Better High-Temperature Stability<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"124\" data-end=\"259\">Think of the bonds in rubber like the links in a chain. The stronger each link, the more force (or heat) it can handle before snapping; or the stronger its heat resistance.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"261\" data-end=\"471\">\n<li data-start=\"261\" data-end=\"372\">\n<p data-start=\"263\" data-end=\"372\">The bond between silicon and oxygen (Si\u2013O) is much stronger than the bond between two carbon atoms (C\u2013C).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"373\" data-end=\"471\">\n<p data-start=\"375\" data-end=\"471\">In technical terms:<br data-start=\"394\" data-end=\"397\" \/>Si\u2013O bond energy \u2248 444 kJ\/mol<br data-start=\"432\" data-end=\"435\" \/>C\u2013C bond energy \u2248 348 kJ\/mol<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"843\">That extra strength means silicone has greater heat resistance because it takes more energy to break the bonds between its atoms. When something heats up, its atoms start to vibrate. If the vibrations get strong enough, they can shake the material\u2019s structure apart but in silicone, the bonds are so strong that this shaking doesn\u2019t do much damage, even at high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"845\" data-end=\"874\">As a result, silicone rubber:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"877\" data-end=\"940\">Doesn\u2019t melt or soften easily, even at temperatures above 200\u00b0C<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"982\">Keeps its shape under pressure and heat<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"1046\">Doesn\u2019t give off toxic fumes or break down like some plastics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1048\" data-end=\"1188\">This makes it perfect for hot environments like steam sterilisation, engine parts, ovens or any system that deals with heat and pressure.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"81\" data-end=\"136\">2. Flexible and Functional in Freezing Temperatures<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"138\" data-end=\"299\">Silicone doesn\u2019t just resist heat, it also performs really well in the cold, often staying flexible at temperatures as low as \u201360\u00b0C (and sometimes even colder).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"301\" data-end=\"551\">Most rubbers become stiff and brittle when frozen. That\u2019s because, at low temperatures, their molecules stop moving freely and the material locks up, like water turning to ice. This can cause cracking, shrinking or total failure in seals and tubes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"553\" data-end=\"594\">But silicone stays soft and rubbery. Why?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"598\" data-end=\"773\">The structure of Si\u2013O bonds\u00a0allows the material to move and bend, even when temperatures drop.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"1015\">Silicone has a very low glass transition temperature (Tg) &#8211;\u00a0this is the point where a rubber goes from flexible to hard and glass-like. Silicone\u2019s Tg is much lower than most other rubbers, so it keeps its elasticity far below freezing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1083\"><strong>Why is the Tg so low? <\/strong><strong>It\u2019s because of how silicone is built:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1215\">Its Si\u2013O backbone is more flexible than the carbon-based chains in most rubbers, allowing more movement at low temperatures.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1218\" data-end=\"1439\">The side groups on silicone (usually small methyl groups) don\u2019t tangle up or stick together. This keeps the chains free to move instead of locking up; so the material doesn\u2019t \u201cfreeze stiff\u201d the way other rubbers can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1441\" data-end=\"1452\">That means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1455\" data-end=\"1508\">It stays soft and stretchable, instead of going rigid<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1511\" data-end=\"1580\">Seals keep their grip and shape, reducing the risk of leaks or cracks<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1583\" data-end=\"1676\">It works reliably in cold-chain logistics, cryogenics, outdoor machinery and winter vehicles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1678\" data-end=\"1821\">In short: silicone stays \u201crubbery\u201d when other materials freeze and stiffen up.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"91\" data-end=\"129\">3. Resistance to Thermal Oxidation<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"131\" data-end=\"246\">Heat isn\u2019t the only thing that damages rubber; oxygen can be just as destructive, especially at high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"248\" data-end=\"469\">Many rubbers are made from organic (carbon-based) materials, and when they\u2019re exposed to heat and air, the oxygen reacts with the carbon chains. This process is called thermal oxidation, and it causes the material to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"500\">Harden and lose flexibility<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"503\" data-end=\"531\">Crack, blister or discolour<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"566\">Break down much faster over time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"568\" data-end=\"614\">Silicone resists this problem far better. Why?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"618\" data-end=\"707\">Its inorganic Si\u2013O backbone doesn\u2019t react with oxygen the way carbon-based chains do.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"710\" data-end=\"795\">The bonds are more stable, even in the presence of heat, air, ozone or UV light.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"797\" data-end=\"817\">That means silicone:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"820\" data-end=\"889\">Doesn\u2019t chalk, fade or flake when exposed to sunlight or outdoor air<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"958\">Keeps its softness and flexibility through repeated heating cycles<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"1025\">Lasts longer in high-temperature or weather-exposed applications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1234\">In simple terms: silicone doesn\u2019t \u201crust\u201d the way organic rubbers do when exposed to heat and oxygen. That makes it ideal for long-term use in environments where other materials would start to break down.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"107\" data-end=\"148\">4.
